Injured while driving for Uber or Lyft in Chicago? Your rights are more complex than you think — and you deserve full compensation. No fees unless we win.
Liability
If another driver caused the accident, their personal auto insurance is the primary source of recovery. You can also pursue a personal judgment if their coverage is insufficient.
During Periods 2 and 3, Uber and Lyft's $1M policy covers you as the driver. During Period 1, contingent coverage of $50K/$100K applies.
If the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured, Uber and Lyft's $1M UM/UIM coverage applies during active trips.
If the platform's own negligence contributed to your accident — defective app design, unreasonable demands — direct claims against the platform may be available.
Insurance
Period 1 — App On, No Ride
$50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident contingent liability. Your personal auto insurance is primary — but most personal policies exclude rideshare activity.
Period 2 — Ride Accepted
$1,000,000 primary liability coverage. Covers you as the driver if another driver hits you while en route to a pickup.
Period 3 — Passenger in Vehicle
$1,000,000 primary liability + $1,000,000 UM/UIM. Full coverage applies while you have a passenger.
Your Personal Insurance
Most personal auto policies exclude rideshare activity. A rideshare endorsement or commercial policy is needed for Period 1 coverage. An attorney will identify all available coverage.
